Selena Medicine Shield

Okiwa, niksokowaiks, matapiks, nitsitapiks. Nistowanakoak  Iiyohkiistinskyakii, Nitomohtoto Siksikawa ki Akainawa, ki Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation

Hello, to all my relations, my Blackfoot name is Iiyaohkiistsinkiyakii meaning Different Singing Woman, and my english name is Selena Medicine Shield.

I come from the Medicine Shield Clan of my late father Franklin Medicine Shield side of the family. I also come from the Fish Eater Clan on my mother Kaily Black Plume/Bird side of the family, and our northern family from Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation.  I have 3 sisters: Marla, Kerri-Ann, and Lexi, and 2 brothers: BJ and Huddy.

I live in Lethbridge with my family, and recently completed my first year as a student at Lethbridge College, in the Child and Youth Care Diploma Program, and plan on returning in the fall to complete my studies.

As a Siksikaitsitapiakii and Alexis Nakota Sioux background heritage, I am honored to represent this year's reign as Miss AFFC Moohkinnstsis 2022-23. I was also the former Miss Blackfoot Canada, 2019-20.

One of my greatest achievements was being able to use my platform for MMIWG in honor and memory of my late grandmother Gloria Black Plume who was murdered in 1999 as we continue seeking justice. I will continue creating awareness and education MMIWG in addressing this issue as a voice for all Indigenous young women and girls.

I would like to encourage our Indigenous youth on the importance of our rich cultural traditional heritage, our histories and languages are strengths on who we are as Indigenous people.

I've been a Jingle Dress Dancer all my life, and today, I continue dancing for my health, wellbeing and healing journey, and looking forward to attending many upcoming cultural event gatherings with family and friends, along in making new connections as well.
