AFCC Project Launch: 18 New Units to Fuel Indigenous Housing Initiative
We are proud to share this important milestone for the AFCC and the City of Calgary (CoC). We are moving forward with plans for our new 18-unit apartment building, a critical development that directly supports the city’s commitment to addressing Indigenous homelessness.
This ambitious project is being driven forward by the success of the Maa’too’maa’taapii Aoko’iyii’piaya initiative. Launched with $33 million in one-time capital funding, this program has generated an incredible response, demonstrating the urgent need for Indigenous-led solutions in Calgary. We are currently in a strong position to secure the necessary support and resources to bring these 18 new units to life.
Thank You to the City of Calgary
The AFCC extends deep gratitude to the City of Calgary for their partnership and instrumental support, particularly through the Non-Market Land Sale (NMLS). This initial commitment is vital, and we anticipate securing the final funding that will make these new, culturally supportive units a reality.
The strong demand for the Maa’too’maa’taapii Aoko’iyii’piaya program shows what we’ve always known: Indigenous-designed and Indigenous-led housing is not only urgently needed, but it is effective, culturally grounded, and community-driven.
Investing in Stability and Home
When Indigenous organizations lead, outcomes improve for everyone. When governments invest in Indigenous housing, communities grow stronger. These 18 new units are part of the AFCC’s mission to provide culturally safe supports, housing pathways, and opportunities for healing and belonging.
Let’s continue to uplift Indigenous-led solutions like Maa’too’maa’taapii Aoko’iyii’piaya and build a Calgary where every person has a safe, culturally supportive place to call home.
