Oki, Danit’ada, Âba wathtech, Tansi!

Following a recent fire that displaced several residents in a northeast Calgary complex, the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary (AFCC) is deeply humbled to welcome two affected community members into their new home at the Omahkkitapioyis Elders Lodge.

When unexpected challenges arise, having a safe place to land is critical. For one of these individuals, who navigates severe mobility challenges, securing accessible and supportive accommodation was an immediate priority. Today, they are settled into a space where they are surrounded by care, fellow residents, and cultural support.

The Importance of Indigenous-Led Housing Calgary

This transition highlights exactly why Indigenous-led housing in Calgary is so vital. True housing support is about much more than simply providing a roof. It is about restoring dignity, ensuring physical safety, and fostering a deep sense of belonging during moments when it matters most.

At Omahkkitapioyis, residents are embraced by a community that understands their culture and values their presence. We are incredibly grateful to see our newest residents welcomed so warmly by the others at the Lodge.

Strength in Community Partnerships

This positive outcome is the result of strong collaboration. We extend our deep gratitude to the Distress Centre Calgary for their immediate partnership and dedication to helping connect these individuals with safe housing.

Furthermore, the Omahkkitapioyis Lodge itself exists because of a shared community vision. Built on land acquired through the City of Calgary non-market land sale, the lodge became a reality thanks to the foundational support of:

  • Alberta’s Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services (Honourable Jason Nixon, ECA, MLA)

  • Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

  • Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF)

  • Calgary Foundation

  • And many other dedicated community partners.

What began as an incredibly difficult week for these two individuals has transformed into a powerful moment of compassion. It is a reminder of how we can wrap around our community members when we work together.

Welcome home. Our hearts are full.
