The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary (AFCC) is immensely proud to announce that our Omahkkitapioyis Elders’ Lodge was recognized with The Art Smith Project Award at the 2023 awards ceremony. Our CEO, Shane Gauthier, had the distinct honour of accepting this significant award on behalf of AFCC and our community.

This prestigious award from the Calgary Homeless Foundation celebrates the Elders’ Lodge for its innovative design and delivery. The 12-unit facility is a cornerstone of our commitment to providing affordable, culturally enriched housing for Indigenous Elders. More than just a residence, the Lodge offers vital cultural gathering spaces, creating a true home and fostering deep connections for Elders to each other and their heritage.

The development and success of the Elders’ Lodge was a true collaborative effort, made possible through valued partnerships. We extend our profound gratitude to the Government of Alberta, Calgary Homeless Foundation, The Calgary Foundation, Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and the City of Calgary for their crucial roles in funding and developing this vital community asset.

This recognition underscores the importance of working together to create safe, supportive, and culturally relevant spaces for our Elders.
