The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary (AFCC) invites you to participate in a weekly smudging ceremony in Calgary. Our “Smudge With Us” program is a welcoming, drop-in event held every Tuesday and Thursday, offering a consistent and safe space for cultural and spiritual connection. This program is a cornerstone of the accessible, Indigenous cultural events we facilitate for the community.
The Significance of the Smudging Ceremony
Smudging is a sacred tradition for many Indigenous cultures, used for purification, healing, and connecting with the spiritual realm. By burning sacred medicines like sage, sweetgrass, or cedar, we cleanse ourselves of negative thoughts and energy, allowing us to become more grounded, centered, and present. This ceremony is a powerful way to begin a day, prepare for important events, or simply find a moment of peace and clarity in a busy world. It is a foundational practice that supports our well-being.
What to Expect at “Smudge With Us”
When you arrive at the Indigenous Hub, you will be welcomed into a calm and respectful environment. Our Cultural Coordinator is present to guide the smudging ceremony in Calgary and to answer any questions you may have. No prior experience is necessary. This is an open space for everyone, whether you have been practicing for years or are being introduced to smudging for the first time. You can stay for a few minutes or longer, depending on what you need. This program is central to the holistic support we offer, complementing services at our Kanakaatsi’nom – Elders’ Drop-in Centre.
