Elder Coordinator
Description

The Elder Coordinator is responsible for direct implementation of AFCC Housing philosophy and policies as they pertain to AFCC Homeless Initiative. In compliance with AFCC Mission Statement, Goals and Objectives, Policies and Procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assist Homeless Aboriginal people to complete client information/intake assessment
• Provide support and referrals to clients with addictions, mental health and behavior management issues ie. Mediation support tenant to landlord, provide culturally appropriate referrals for healing, crisis intervention, and other duties as required by AFCC’s Housing Team.
• Work with the current Homeless Initiative Staff at AFCC.

The Elder Coordinator will be an individual who has certain gifts for working with community members. Each of these gifts, separately or together, is related to maintaining the holistic health of a community, and each of these gifts could be utilized in a ‘healing’ effort by Elders. At the same time, all Elders share qualities or characteristics which are recognized by the community as qualities or characteristics which the community may reference. Personal qualities which an Elder may possess include: respect, age, knowledge, spiritually grounded, compassionate approach, wisdom, honesty, patience, humility, trustworthiness, life-long dedication to the holistic well-being of the community, life-long dedication to learning, perception of their role in life, communicators, openness and acceptance, community leader and perhaps community-designated (NOSM Lakehead, Laurentian Medicine March 2008).
