Post-secondary funding: Belcourt Brosseau Métis Awards MARCH 31 Deadline

The BBMA endowment provides awards so that Métis Albertans demonstrating financial need, commitment, and a desire to be gainfully employed can realize self-sufficiency through the advancement of their post-secondary education and skills development. Since 2001, the Fund has provided awards totalling over $7.2 million to more than 1200 Alberta Métis students.
Awards are intended to assist recipients with essential costs such as tuition, fees, and supplies. Each year approximately 160 awards are approved by the BBMA Panel, most awards range between $2,000 and $10,000.

Award Criteria:

  • Be Métis (Proof of Métis heritage must be provided before any award is confirmed but does not have to be submitted with the application.)
  • Intend to pursue post-secondary education; leading to a degree, diploma, certificate or license
  • Be permanent residents or citizens of Canada

Applications are process online: www.bbma.ca

  • Along with the completed online application students will be required to upload:
  • Two current reference letters and a copy of their most recent transcripts
  • Awards Candidates will be advised by email in early July of each year.
  • Edmonton Community Foundation will direct funds to post-secondary institution
  • In general, student programs should not start before August 1
  • Applicants may re-apply in subsequent years

Selection process is a holistic assessment of:

  • Financial need
  • Connection to the Métis community
  • Likelihood of improved career opportunities

Priority may also be given to:

  • Entering their first year of post-secondary studies
  • Demonstrating commitment to studies and maturity
  • History of volunteer work and leadership
  • Extenuating personal circumstances
  • Full-time study
