141 Signing Anniversary of Treaty 7 Event

Join Mount Royal University students, staff, faculty and community members as we acknowledge the 141 signing anniversary of Treaty 7 with a day long event titled Iinistsi 141.

Iinistsi is the Blackfoot word for treaty.

On September 22, 1877 the First Nations of Southern Alberta including the Blackfoot: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani; Stoney Nakoda: Bearspaw, Chiniki, Wesley; and Tsuut’ina signed Treaty #7 east of Calgary at Blackfoot Crossing.

The territory extends from out west at the Rocky Mountains and goes east to the Cypress Hills and north to the Red Deer River and south to the USA border.

This is a day long event with numerous opportunities to engage throughout the day.

A detailed agenda is below.

11:00 a.m. an unveiling of Inii Awatoo (Buffalo on the Move) rock monument near the pond will occur with a blessing, drumming and story from Elder Miiksikaam, Clarence Wolfleg Sr, of Siksika Nation.

11:30 a.m. an unveiling of the Indigenous mural in the Wellness Services will occur with speeches and recognition from Cree Artist, Dion Simon, students and staff involved in the initiative.

12:00 p.m. a feast is being held in the lobby of the Leacock Theatre with Indigenous cuisine.

1:00 p.m. presentations from Treaty 7 scholars and academics, community workers and chief will be hosted inside of the Leacock Theatre .

All of these events are free and open for everyone to attend.

There is no need to register for any event.

The work to commemorate this day is put together by various departments and faculties on campus including the Iniskim Centre, Office of Academic Indigenization, Apaat tsi kani takiiiks Initiative at the Bissett School of Business and School of Communications, Wellness Services, Facilities and Faculty of Science.
